Heart Transplant

It's maybe not often I share poetry like this, but this time I'm going to. It's called Heart Transplant:

And then you look right through me;

Through my skin,

Through my flesh,

Through my bone,

And deeper,

Deeper still

Your gaze goes on and on

Until -

It reaches my heart,

My black and weighty heart

My stone cold heart

Laid bare for you to see.

And tears fall

(from somewhere

I was only half aware existed)

As you reach towards me.

I do not steel myself

for the moment

When your hand grips my heart

I can only close my thin-lidded eyes

As your glory thunders round

With shards of pure light

And sound.

And then once more you look right through me;

Through my skin,

Through my flesh,

Through my bone,

And deeper,

Deeper still

Until –

My heart is changed

It is shining,

Refined,

Renewed.

I sit

In breathless silence.

Free.
