I was sat hunting frantically for some books for my essays in the city library today when two ladies came up to the enquiries desk and asked something to do with television. Can't remember quite what it was. Anyway, the librarian replied that they should go to the reference library because she know, since she didn't have a TV. The ladies came away visibly shocked. They swore loudly and said something along the lines of 'how the devil does she go without telly? I couldn't survive!'. I wanted to point out that this, being a library, was the ideal place to discover how easy it is to survive and indeed thrive without telly. But I didn't, partly because it would have been a tad hypocritical since we have a telly in our house, and partly because they were quite big ladies.
I picked up two seperate volumes of David Copperfield today for the truly bargainous price of 99 pence. This put a smile on my face.

don't you hate those advert comments that are always popping up?
just thought i'd leave a real one to go with it!
i think anyone can survive without tv, its just that some people seem to let it run their lives, these people obviously don't live interesting enough lives to survive without being told what to do, buy, behave and look like!
(hoping im not being too hypocritical myself here :P)
Yeah, when you go on holiday or something of the like where you spend tracks of time away from the television, you begin to realise just how easy and great it is to be without it.
You swear to your self that you'll never return to that sofa-sitter seducing siren again, but lo, on comes the next episode of "Lost"...

On television. I would like to highlight my American experience of television. I often get pitying and more often sympathetic looks from american collegues of mine when televsion conversation comes up. Explaining to your average Yank that I only have 4 channels at home one of which is in another language is very difficult. 1st there is disbelief then the shock kicks in and the the invitation to watch tv at their house. I have taken up an offer of this once and only once. Have found a channel interesting enough to watch out of the standard 60 odd avaliable after 5 minutes of program showing the adverts or commercials come on and this is apparently stanndard through the American broadcasting spectrum a 2:1 ratio of adverts:program. Thus television is not only a pointless time waste but also get you frustrated as well.
I am liking the way this post has become a forum for discussion about the merits of television. Long may it continue.
